Mar Menor August 2nd 2010

We have been waiting for this for some time, a few of us had played the old 9 hole course but no one had been to the updated 18 hole Mar Menor Course. What a surprise, we had been expecting a tight between the houses layout but found some wide fairways with good grass and excellent greens. The Course was totally different from hole 7 onwards, until hole 17 where the final 2 holes from the original 9 finished behind the hotel, adjacent to the swimming pool.
This was a twilight round for us and our first tee time was 3.30pm, sounds idyllic, but in reality it was probably the warmest part of the day and temperatures were in the high 30´s. There was not a big turnout for this game which included only 1 lady player, but as with most Societies at this time of year members leave Spain to evade the heat. Their loss though, as those who played, enjoyed the course. The management at Mar Menor are much more pleasant than that of Polaris World, a friendly welcome and course marshalling was very much appreciated, as was the free bottles of cool water brought out to us on the course. An essential item I found was a stroke saver but to get it I had to visit the Supermarket on site as they were not available in the pro shop !
The competition was an individual Stableford in two categories and the scoring range was incredible. Players who normally score well, failed badly and some of those who hadn´t been playing well recently, shone with good scores. We had the usual nearest the pins on the par 3s and also 2 others, on the 10th a par 5, it was nearest the pin in 3 and the 18, nearest in 2. The 10th nearest in 3 was won by myself after a 210 metre second shot landed about 8 ft from the pin and a steady putt gave me an eagle 3, you can´t get much closer than that ! The 18th and the 4th were not won, the remaining 2 nearest the pins were won by “in form” Darren Hancock.
The results on the day were as follows :-

Overall it was a good afternoon if somewhat slow, but as there was no one else on the course but us, it didn´t matter too much. Congratulations to all players including our guests. This is a course I am sure we will visit again soon.
Our next game is at Las Ramblas on Wednesday 18th August. Payday is Saturday 14th at the Campsite, San Javier.

Captains Charity Day at Corvera Golf and Country Club Wednesday 21st July 2010

Captain Roy Herbert organized a fantastic day at Corvera Golf for members and guests of our society with proceeds going to our local charity HELP Mar Menor. Roy was able to secure a sponsor for the day and we extend a big thank you to AMBER Pools who provided the trophy and all the prizes on the day.
There were actually 16 prizes given out for different achievements including longest drive, straightest drive, nearest the pins and best individual scores. The overall competition was a mystery pairs and the cards were drawn after the game to give a winner and runner up prize.
The day began with most players meeting up at the El Cojo Restaurant just outside Corvera Village for coffee, then it was down to the course and collect the buggies, a few minutes practice before the first 4 ball teed off at 10.30. Vice Captain, Barry Beale was in the first 4 ball and clearly marked each tee with the instructions for that hole, i.e. nearest the pin, longest drive etc. which certainly made it easier than having to remember where they all were. We have visited Corvera before and found it to be a very golfer friendly course, short but well looked after. This being the case and the fact that it was well over 35 degrees during the day, led to some good scores, in fact, 10 players scored 38 points or more, the top score of 40 being achieved by 3 members. Arguably, the worst shot of the day came from a guest, no names but his son was playing alongside him and on the 12th hole he sliced his tee shot which entered the Gents Toilets, bounced around it for 30 seconds then meekly rolled down the path and onto the grass 10 ft in front of him.! Best shot of the day reported was that of Allyson Masters who on the par 5, 5th hole, reached the green in 3 and then chipped in for 4, resulting in 5 points. I am sure there were a few other great shots on the day but I can’t mention them all.
After the game we all retreated to the El Cojo Restaurant again for post game drinks and a 3 course meal. This was most welcome as after 5 hours out in the burning sun, the shade and the beer went down well. Our thanks to Paul and Barry who spent almost an hour working on the score cards before delivering them to Roy. After the meal there was a raffle followed by the prize giving. I can’t mention all the winners but they are all on our website, however, the overall winners were Roy Herbert and Allyson Masters, (see photo) and the runners up Alan Masters and Frank Broadhurst. The individual score winner on the day was Ty Williams. The cup donated by AMBER Pools will now become an annual challenge hosted by the Captain, The result of the donations on the day totalled over 400 € and a presentation of this money to HELP Mar Menor will take place shortly at our regular presentation evening at the Campsite San Javier.
Congratulations to all that took part and thank you for your support.
Our next game will be at Mar Menor Golf on Monday 2nd August. Pay day will be at the Campsite, Saturday 31st July between 11am and 12 noon.
