Charity Day February 6th 2008 in aid of AECC

This is a San Javiers organised event which 2 years ago raised 6.500€ for AECC. Next year there is a different format and Mike Chambers who is the Captain of the English Team has produced the letter below and is asking for your help to form the English Team. Could any english players interested in participating speak to Bob Gallard at Leven Golf on Saturday 5th January when we collect the green fees.

INTER COUNTRY GOLF EVENT
On the 6th February 2008 the above competition will take place between 6 countries:
England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Spain and the rest of Europe, to establish the
champion country for the area. Most golf societies in the area have been
offered the opportunity to have their society represented in this prestigious
competition by an English player and in theory most English golfers can play for
their COUNTRY! - Other countries have their own ideas for team selection.
1) Pay an entrance fee of between €5 and €10 - whatever you can afford to your
societies official on your clubs competition day. All of this money will go to:
A.E.C.C. (cancer charity). (If you do not have the money in your wallet or purse
on the day pay it next time).
2) Qualify as the top English player (on the day) in your golf society’s normal
competition. For example if the competition for the day is “stableford” and as an
English golfer you finish third behind an Irish and Scottish golfer you would be
your societies representative to go forward to 2) below. NB Other countries
golfers monetary contribution would be welcome but it is ONLY an English
golfer that is needed for this “competition within a competition”.
3) Attend Hacienda del Alamo on Wednesday 23rd January 2008 with around 20 to
25 other society representatives to “play off” to represent ENGLAND at Hacienda
del Alamo on Wednesday 6th February. 10.00 shotgun start. Get to this stage and
you will have around a 1 in 2 (2.5) chance of representing England !
4) Represent England on February 6th 2008.
NB Each country has to pay €1,000 (for the AECC cancer charity) to enter – it is
planned for this money to be raised from the golf society member’s entrance fee
as in 1) above. Assuming all the money is raised (20 societies by only €50 is
€1,000) the competition day will be FREE and will include: i) Green fee at
Hacienda del Alamo ii) England team shirt iii) Buffet afterwards iv) Competition
awards – nearest the pin, longest drive and so on.
The competition will be heavily publicised with most local newspapers, Sol TV
and so on. Local businesses will also be sponsoring every hole on the course.
Please support the qualifying event to represent your golf society and give
yourself a chance of playing for your COUNTRY!
At the same time your entrance fee (maybe only equivalent to buying some raffle
tickets) will greatly benefit a very worthwhile charity!

Results & Report from December match at Altorreal

A disappointing turn out for this game but it was only a week ago that we played at El Valle and it is easy to understand that members can’t afford to play golf at today’s prices every week unless you are a member of a course, or extremely rich.
We were at Altorreal to try out the new course changes that had been made since our last visit. The majority of our players on the day had not seen the new greens at holes 1, 2 and 4 so it was a surprise for them as they teed off on hole 1 to find the green had been lifted up and moved to the right, also it is in much better condition than it has ever been. Hole 2 looks really different with its raised green and new approach, as does hole 4 where it is a lot more open and the fairways seems to be not as steep. Our Cat. 1 players used to drive holes 2 and 4 but with the re-design they seem to have put a stop to this, or maybe it was the wind for which the early part of the round was quite strong. Altorreal has been our main course for some years and members always play well, this day wasn’t different, scores were above average and players comments were very encouraging about the changes made. We will certainly be back at Altorreal in the near future to see how it is progressing.
Due to the Christmas party cancellation presentation for the December games will be included in the January presentation, venue to be advised.

The results were as follows:-

Cat 1.
Winner Alex McLennan 36 pts
2nd Alan Masters 33 pts

Cat 2
Winner Bob Gallard 37 pts
2nd Alan Ross 35 pts

Cat 3
Winner Frank Broadhurst 38 pts
2nd Jan Floyd 38 pts
