Report and Resutls from El Plantio October 24th

Another good day out for the Society with 41 players going by coach to El Plantio. I don’t think our Society have played there before so quite a few members were experiencing it for the first time. Our thanks to Bob Marksman who got up early to open the range so that members could have coffee and a bacon sandwich before we left The organisation ran like clockwork and after boarding the coach at 8.30am we found ourselves with plenty of time to practice before our 1st tee time of 10.48am. The weather was fairly good to us as well, considering the previous days of wet weather.

Some good scores were recorded on the day and congratulations go to all those who played. There was a “2’s” competition which everyone entered for 1€ and Teo (our Bolivian Professional) managed to score two “2’s” and at the death Mark Perry got nearest the pin on the 18th and sank the putt to share the pot. On the coach on the way home stories abounded about the day and just a few made me smile. Firstly, Paul Fernandez, a cat. 3 player approached me before the game to say that he had a broken toe and couldn’t get a shoe on his foot. I said “no problem, play in 1 shoe and 1 sandal”, which he did and came 2nd in cat 3 with 30 points. Another cat 3 player, Boris Pharo suffered a humiliating experience on the 14th when his tee shot rebounded off the rocks 75 yds in front and came back 30 yds beyond the tee. The humiliation was that it took 5 mins for his playing partners to stop laughing !! I was asked not to print this but I couldn’t resist. Finally, Dave Cook who plays well in cat 2 failed to reach the ladies tee on the 15th, I saw him in the bar before we left buying the beer for his playing partners, he said he couldn’t pay the other forfeit as there was a lady in his 4 ball.

After a long day we eventually made it back to the Escuela de Golf at just after 7pm making it an 11 hour day for most of us. Our thanks go to El Plantio for presenting the course in a good condition after all the problems with the recent weather.

The results of the competition are below . Presentation evening held at the Escuela de Golf on Friday 26th October.

Cat 1
Winner Alex MClennan 36 pts
2nd Alan Masters 35 pts
3rd Bob Marksman 35 pts

Results and Report from Alicante 10th September

The Society always enjoys a day out and Alicante certainly is that for us. The coach arrived on time as usual and 36 members left at 11.00am for an afternoon tee time of 1.30pm. As usual everything was organized with great efficiency and I was informed that we would be starting on the 10th tee. I immediately informed ‘everyone’ of this fact and then made my own preparations. As starter or the day I made my way to the 10th tee only to find that the first fourball had gone and that I was late, only by a minute though, and as I called the second 4 ball onto the tee there were only two players there. Having let the 3rd team away the remaining 2 players of the 2nd 4 ball turned up saying that it was very quiet on the first tee and they suspected that something was not quite right so made their way to the tenth. No problem it just meant they were fitted in next. No names will be mentioned. Apart from the first 4 ball who I didn’t see away everyone else seemed to have at least 1 person in the group unable to find the fairway from the 10th tee. I saw many splashes and even an overshoot of the net beyond the lake to the left, houses on the right even took a few hits. I put this down to first tee nerves but eventually everyone got away.

This was a stableford competition in our usual 3 categories and even with the bad start by some there were one or two very good scores recorded. There were a couple of temporary greens still in play and 2 two par 5’s had been reduced to par 4’s which should have made it a bit easier, in particular the 14th where the temporary green was placed before the sunken ruins which meant not having to play a 3rd shot into the green with water to the left. This however will be short lived as the course is opening its new greens next week.

Our thanks go to Alicante Golf for keeping the course in such good condition despite the major reconstruction taking place.

The results of the competition are as follows :-

1st Class
Marksman Bob 1st 33
Masters Alan 2nd 33
Earey Ian 3rd 28

2nd Class
Ross Alan 1st 40
Green Geoff 2nd 38
Payne George 3rd 34

Fernandez Paul 3rd 27

Report and Results for EL VALLE 29th August

This seems to be a very popular format to play as a Society and I was encouraged by the 52 players who turned out for this event. However, this was the first time the Society had played this course and we were taking advantage of the excellent deal given by the recently opened El Valle course by taking a first tee time of 1.40pm.

I have never played golf in “Death Valley” but it must be the same as El Valle on Wednesday afternoon! Temperatures soared to 40+ degrees which took its toll on all but a few of our members. Two failed to finish the 18 holes, retiring exhausted, others who had chosen to walk were grateful for a lift from those in a buggy as their water ran out, others who had plenty of water and a big umbrella stayed the course but were glad to see the clubhouse. As the clubhouse is only temporary it is quite a way from the 18th green so everyone was thankful for the free ride back from the staff.

As this was a first visit to El Valle the consensus was that it was a superb course, described by some of the players as picturesque, challenging and totally different to Polaris Worlds other courses, it looks like we shall be going back but only when it cools down. I visited and played the course the day before our competition just to get a look at what was in store. I found it was in excellent condition and the staff were very friendly and listened to constructive comments. I was informed that when in a buggy you had to stay on the paths but realised that all the distance markers were on the sprinkler heads which involved a walk onto the course to find any sort of mark. Having suggested painting marks on the pathway I was very pleased to see them appear the very next day -thank you Craig for listening.

Due to the heat it did seem a long round but some good scores were recorded. The results are as follows:-

Winning team
George Stein
Ray Reader
Geoff Ellender gross 68 nett 44.5
Bev Ellender

2nd place Team
Paul Matthews

Mark Watts gross 70 nett 51.8

Bob Bushnell gross 67 nett 51.9

Report at Bonalba July 11th

This was the perfect day out for most of us even if the scoring wasn’t too good. It was just nice to get away and play a different type of course to those we were used to on the Costa Calida. Our thanks to Richard Davies who organizes everything at Bonalba and for making our visit run so smooth.

40 players left the Escuela de Golf in San Javier at the crack of dawn, well 7.45am, by coach to make sure we arrived in time for our first tee time of 11am. Well we seem to miss all the traffic and pulled into Bonalba at just before 10am giving everyone plenty of time to get ready. Everyone was in buggies which was a good thing because the day was very warm and walking is not much fun in these temperatures.

As I have said the scores were nothing to write home about and with only 4 players in Cat. 1 the winner Alan Masters (34) was the only prize winner. Neil Robinson was 2nd and Alex McLennan 3rd.

Cat 2 showed a bit better with the first 3 players all scoring 35 pts. The handicap secretary was kept busy sorting this out and finally 1st place went to Geoff Green, 2nd was Tony Elsworth and 3rd was Mark Perry.

In Cat. 3 the scores were quite low proving that this course is a real test for the high handicappers. In 1st place was Jim Allison (25), 2nd Dave Allin (24) on countback from Graham Sherlock in 3rd place.

Nearest the pins went to Mark Perry, Alex McLennan, Dave Wilcox and Alan Masters.

The presentation evening took place at the Escuela de Golf in San Javier on Saturday 1st August.

Report at Roda July 25th

An excellent turn out for this competition which was either played as a medal or stableford. I was sorry to have missed this as I was in the UK attending my grandsons 1st birthday – I do make some sacrifices to my golf !

Anyway Roda is my favourite course and it would seem to be so for a lot of our Society members as the scoring was very good in both games. In the medal round the winner was Roy Herbert with a nett 70 followed by Dave Williams nett 72 and Alan Masters in 3rd with a nett 74 playing off 4.

In the Stableford competition incredibly the first 3 players all scored the same again as in the last competition but this time it was 39 pts. On countback, Bob Bushnell came 1st, Paul Fernandez 2nd and Keith Powell 3rd.

A best guest prize was awarded but unfortunately the winner, James Bushnell had returned home to Scotland so his father, Bob (Stableford winner) collected his prize for him. James scored an amazing 45 pts.

Our thanks go to Bob Marksman, proprietor of Escuela de Golf and the Kaddy Shack who provided sandwiches after the game.

The prize giving was held at the Escuela de Golf San Javier on Saturday 1st August followed by a cold buffet and dancing to live music.

Report & Results for Roda Presidents Cup June 6th 07

This new trophy was inaugurated by Barry The competition was a 2 ball better ball on full handicap, this along with being able to choose partners was a very open competition. We had an 11am start on both the first and 10th tees to get everyone away and back as close as possible as we were having the presentation straight after the game outside the clubhouse. Looking at the start sheet there were some very good pairs playing and thought had gone into their use of handicaps for partners.

Several low handicap partners played and with the condition of the course and the weather the odds were in favour of one of these pairs winning. How wrong we were, players really got into the spirit of this competition and some very good scores were coming in. Society Captain Bob Gallard and Escuela de Golf proprietor Bob Marksman paired up and came home with a commendable 44 points, however, being first pair away off the 10th tee they had an anxious wait to see how they stood. They didn’t have to wait too long before the pairing of Dave Wilcox and Mark Perry came in with 45 points to take the clubhouse lead. A short wait brought in another notable score of 43 points from Len Ford and John Butler but the surprise pairing of Ian Robertson and Brian Goodbourn recorded an amazing score of 49 points. This everyone thought would be the best but there were still some good pairs out there, in particular, Neil Robinson and Teo Ledezma, our two professionals. However, two society players who are always there or there abouts on the winners podium arrived back with 50 points. Alan Ross and Keith Powell played an incredible round to win the competition both playing off about 20 h/cap. Our two pros managed a total of 41 points.

During the round there were other competitions, such as longest drive on the 18th , won by Alan Masters and a nearest the pin on the difficult par three 7th hole which was won by Bob Bushnell using his driver !!! Most players entered the ‘2’s competition and there were 4 successful winners, Jim Burke, Roy Moore and Ian Robertson at the 13th and Alan Masters at the 7th.

The presentation was made by Barry Butterworth of the new trophy (which will remain at the Clubhouse,) to the winners, prizes and trophies were donated by Barry, San Javier Golf Society and Roda Golf. On behalf of San Javier Golf Society I wish to extend a very big thank you to Pablo Riestro and his team for accommodating the society and for providing prizes for our winners.
