A disappointing turn out for this game when we had negotiated a meal in the cost. The weather was fantastic and the course looked good although the greens were still recovering from hollow tining they were playable. It still surprises me that some courses continue to do maintenance work of this extent and keep the course open for play. Serious golfers expect value for money and when they get substandard conditions they are the first to complain. So to all courses, not just La Torre, either tell us you are working on the course so that we have the option to find another course or close it and do the work without players getting in the way and moaning about the condition.
That aside, 38 members and guests played in a choice of Medal or Stableford rounds. We had a 9am first tee which enabled everyone to get around in time for a late lunch in the restaurant. The majority played stableford but there were enough in the medal competition to make it worthwhile. There were also 4 nearest the pin prizes and a “2’s” competition for those who wished to enter. Scoring was low but that was to be expected with the greens the way they were. But the “2’s” competition managed 6 winners.
In the stableford competition it was close at the top with Joyce Armstrong running out winner with 34 points on count back from Mark Watts, in 3rd place was Chris Hulme with 33points.
The medal competition was won by Bob Marksman with a really well fought gross 74 nett 72. La Torre is one of the very few course I know with a negative slope value and also a par of 68, so congratulations to Bob for his 72 playing off 2. In second place was our Handicap Secretary Steve Millgate with a nett 66, Steve was very quick to point out that this included an 11 on the 5th hole. In 3rd place was Paul Matthews with 77 Nett. Our best guest on the day was Richard Carpenter with 32 points. Nearest the pin prizes went to :- Hole 5 Bob Gallard, Hole 9, Mark Watts, Hole 17 Alex McLennan, Hole 15 marker was missing and not returned even though Alex who was last out reckoned he was closest.
The presentation took place at the Escuela de Golf San Javier on Saturday 26th May with the regular Saturday barbecue and singers, “Protocol” entertaining for the evening.

Report & Results April 2nd 07 at Alicante San Juan

Not even a free coach to Alicante could entice more than 32 players out for this game. Alicante is always a good day out but perhaps it was a bit close to our last game and 50€ is still a bit expensive for a round of golf twice in a week. Nevertheless we left the Escuela de Golf in San Javier at 7.45am to make sure we arrived time for our first tee at 10am. We need not have rushed as a small problem arose when we arrived – miscommunication had the course giving us a first tee of 10.51am. After a short negotiation we managed to begin at 10.30 so everyone had time for a coffee and practice before setting off on a beautiful day. This was a bonus as we were expecting a dull cool day with showers, what we got was a warm, calm sunny day, its amazing how localized the weather can be in Spain.
The competition was a stableford in 3 categories and there were 4 NTP prizes up for grabs. Alicante San Juan course is undergoing some refurbishments of their greens and although there were 4 temporary greens it did not detract from the enjoyment of playing there.
Scores were as follows
Cat. 1 Winner Alex McLennan
2nd Chris Tudor
3rd Paul Richards
Cat 2 Winner Alan Boggess
2nd Geoff Green
3rd George Payne
Cat 3 Winner Mick Hardy
2nd Joyce Armstrong
3rd Steve Millgate
Best Guest Roy Moore
Nearest the Pins Bob Gallard, Anne Hobbs, Barry Butterworth, Roy Moore.

Report & Results March 28th at La Serena
|
|
A good turn out for this game which was originally a medal but to allow others to play it became an either or, Medal or Stableford. In the end only 14 of our 42 players took up the medal option and went for it on a perfect day for golf. Most of the medal players were the low handicappers and everyone thought that La Serena was the wrong course for this, but the scores showed a different story.
Neil Robinson, our newly elected Vice Captain was out early and began to record some good score. Neil is looking forward to his training course where he is hoping to get a certificate to allow him to teach golf professionally, and because of this he has to prove he can play to a good standard. Playing off 6 he recorded a gross 76 net 70 to finish 2 under par. This was a fantastic score and of course was well in front of everyone else. In second place was Bob Marksman with a net 75 and in 3rd was Les Carr net 78 both good scores on this course.
The stableford players were not in categories for this game so it was an open competition, players off 7 were up against some of our 28 plus handicappers. Normally the high handicap players don’t enjoy La Serena, quoting “too much water” but on this occasion our winner was a 28 handicapper, Brian Goodbourn with 34 points on countback from Alan Ross (19.5). Third place went to Paul Richards with 31 points. The best guest on the day was Len Biggins who scored 30 points.
The presentation for this game and the two previous games was held at Escuela de Golf, San Javier on Saturday 31st March.

The Allan Rea Memorial Trophy
In aid of A.E.C.C.
Altorreal Golf Course on March 26th 2007
This yearly game in the Society puts the Captains team against the Vice Captains Team. This year 52 players took part, making 13 teams of two on each side. The format was 4 ball better ball match play using full individual handicaps. This was a new novel format for the Alan Rae Trophy and one which proved to be most enjoyable. The teams were drawn out of a hat and then each captain formed his pairings. There was some collaboration between the captain and vice captain on who should play against whom and when the team sheet was produced it looked about even on paper. How wrong can you be.- giving each player their full handicap led to some unusual scores with two teams losing 8 and 6, fortunately it was one from each side.
The Vice Captain led the teams away and struck an early lead holding out to win by 2. The second team did exactly the same and when the third team came in 1 up the Vice Captain was looking good. The Captains side scored a point with the 4th team who won 5 and 4 the longest winning margin up to that point but team 5 brought a 3 and 2 win for the Vice Captain and it stood at 4/1. Team 6 had the first 8 and 6 win for the Captains side but then a run of 4 matches with wins for the Vice Captain sealed the trophy. The last of these being an 8 and 6 win. The final 3 matches resulted in a 5 and 4 to the Captains side and all square on the penultimate match and the final game which included the Captain was a win by 2 for the Vice Captain. Overall this years result was a 9½ / 3½ win for the Vice Captain Bob Gallard and his team.
Commiserations to Alex McLennan and his team who were the holders of the trophy from last year. The presentation of the trophy and medals for the winning side will be made at the Captains Dinner on 21st April.
Each player donated 20€ to this game for our chosen charity A.E.C.C. who will be presented with a cheque for just over 1000€ at the dinner. The Captain and Vice Captain would like to thank Altorreal Golf Course for their generosity in allowing the members to play the course for free.

Report on Hacienda match 12th March 07
|
|
This game had a disappointing turn out for such a good course but I can appreciate that it is a long course and not everyone’s’ favourite. This apart there were 52 players who eventually made their way to Hacienda despite the road closures and diversions. A lovely sunny day, with a slight breeze which kept the temperature down and it felt quite cold later on in the day. Again we had some first timers at Hacienda and a good day was in prospect.
Cat. 1 was close as usual with 34 pts being the top score by Bob Marksman in 1st place followed closely by Bob Gallard on 33pts in 2nd place. Third place went to Alex McLennan on 28 points on countback.
Cat 2 saw the best score of the day with Les Dougherty scoring 39 points and in second place Charlie Chaplin who played a very steady round to total 38 points. In 3rd place was Keith Powell on 34 points.
Cat. 3 had a newcomer to the winners list, that of John Storey with 33 points, in second place was Graham Haywood, not seen in the prizes for some time, on 29 pts and in 3rd place was our new handicap secretary Steve Millgate with 28 points.
Nearest the pin prizes went to Trevor Hobbs, Mark Perry, Ken Beever and Sid Berry.
