Report & Results February 07 at La Torre

La Torre Match February 26th

This was a much awaited game at La Torre as the deal for golf and meal was so good and it had been booked for so long. Most of our Society had played the course individually over the past 2 months so it was not too much of a surprise. The rule about buggies only on the paths though did limit numbers who went, just 80 members and guest turned out for the day and with an 11am first tee it was going to be a long day. The weather was perfect again although around midday it did go cloudy for a while, but that past and the afternoon was warm and sunny, just how we like it. This game having 80 players assured us of more than one person in category one unlike our last outing so there was some competition to look forward to.

The early starters managed to get around without any hold-ups and it was evident that the course had been shortened up. Tee placements were blue rather than yellow and all the par 3’s were easily reachable including for our high handicappers, this was obvious from the number of names on the nearest the pin markers in our competition. I must congratulate in particular Alex McLennan and Alan Masters for their achievements on the par 3’s where they were extremely close. With forward tees the par 5;s became reachable in 2 for our longer hitters so some good scores were recorded. A number of players found the areas of sand alongside the fairways difficult to get out of, even after the local ruling that you could have preferred lies in there, this is a new feature of golf courses and one I feel we are going to have to get used to. Sand and areas of desert don’t require water so maintenance costs are reduced. I don’t think this detracts from the enjoyment as it encourages players to be more accurate off the tee, and as I was told when I first started playing golf that it was played on grass anyway! I have to say that I play better when the sun comes out and its nice and warm, this said I felt I had played well and it proved correct as I again won category 1. Before I started (last at 1.32pm) I had seen the opposition in Cat. 1 go out and feared the worst but they failed to score well and Cat 1 finished like this:-

1st Bob Gallard 36 pts
2nd Alan Masters 32 pts
3rd Dave Docker 28 pts

Cat 2 saw 3 new names at the top
1st Barry Beale 39 pts (best score of the day)
2nd Roy Herbert 37 pts
3rd Ken Beever 33 pts on c/back from Keith Powell

Cat 3 was a close call for 2nd and 3rd but the overall winner was
1st Mark Watts 36 pts
2nd Atholl Robb 33 pts on c/back from
3rd Bill Walkenhorst 33pts

The nearest the pin prizes went to Alex McLennan, Alan Masters, and Paul Richards x 2. The down fall of a late start meant that only the earliest managed to get to the restaurant before it closed at 4.30pm, so quite a few didn’t bother to return at 8pm for the evening meal, there were however, 30+ members who either stayed or returned in the evening and enjoyed the excellent buffet meal that was part of the incredibly low price deal offered by Polaris World and the Nicklaus Golf Trail. We have heard that as from the 1st March a new deal will be on offer again including a meal so I am sure we will be back for another Society day soon.

Report & Results February 07 at Mosa Trajectum

Mosa Trajectum Competititon,
February 12th 2007

Another lovely day in Murcia for our visit to Mosa, the sun shone and the wind blew, too much for some of us who struggled to cope. A good turn out allowed us a two tee start and we were able to play the Pine and Olive as many of our Society members have a real dislike of the Stones. As normal we had 4 nearest the pin prizes on all the par 3’s and I thought at one stage I was up for drinks all round on the 8th Pine course but fortunately the ball stopped 4 inches from the hole. This however, proved insignificant to Charlie Chaplin’s effort on the 26th on the Olive course, his ball finished 1” from the hole and the sharp intake of breath could apparently be heard in the clubhouse. Congratulations Charlie but better luck next time.

We have four members of Mosa in the Society and they all turned out to play on Monday. It does pay to know your way around the course as Tony Elsworth proved by scoring 39 points. Quite a few members were playing Mosa for the first time and despite the wind gave it a thumbs up for its condition. The staff at the course were helpful and efficient and for once we had no problems with getting started on time. It wasn’t until I finished though that I discovered that I had won Cat. 1 with only 23 points, the reason being that I was the only player under our 10 handicap limit for Category 1.

The results were, Cat. 1 Winner Bob Gallard 23 points
Cat 2 Winner Tony Elsworth 39 points
2nd Barry Geary 33 points
3rd Les Carr 32 points
Cat 3 Winner Steve Millgate 31 points
2nd Joyce Armstrong 26 points
3rd Margaret McBride 25 points

Our best guest on the day was Anthony Pickup with 32 points

The four nearest the pin prizes went to hole 3 - Tony Elsworth, Hole 8 - Bob Gallard, Hole 20 - Boris Pharo and Hole 26 - Charlie Chaplin.

Presentation evening was on Saturday evening 17th February with a free supper for the players and entertainment by “Smithy”.
