Report January 9th at La Serena

San Javier Golf Society
9th January at La Serena Golf Course

When I posted this game I didn’t think we would get 50 names on the list. Many of our members played in our last visit here and lost loads of balls to the many lakes on La Serena, however, 52 of us went out to try again. Our captain Alex McLennan volunteered to be starter and thanks to him everyone got away on time. It was a long round though even with our first 4 groups in buggies. If the wind gets up this course can be really difficult to play, but on this day the weather forecast said it would be calm and it was, I for one was grateful for this as on our last outing I lost 9 balls fighting the wind.

Playing in three categories on such a perfect day for golf we were expecting some good scores, what we were not expecting was the round of a lifetime. Terry Cockerill playing off 24 including the slope scored an incredible 50 points. When he came in he couldn’t believe it himself as for the last 3 holes he was complaining of a pain in his side (later diagnosed as a kidney stone). A score of this magnitude also gets his handicap cut massively and after calculations poor old Terry lost 9.8 shots. His new handicap is now 11.5, somewhere he has never been in all his golfing career.

Category 1 players had a close finish as usual and 1st place went to Bob Marksman with 35 points, in second place Barry Floyd on 34 points stealing glory again from me by 1 on 33 points.

In category 2 which is our largest category, the winner was Paul Matthews with 37 points who is now inching his way to category 1 by now having to play off 11.1. In second place came Keith Powell who has had a forced layoff with golfers elbow for a couple of months, Keith scored 32 points and was followed home in 3rd place by a new name in our winners circle that of Marion Vincent with 30 points.

The result of category 3 was never in doubt as stated before Terry Cockerill scored 50 points and almost made it from category 3 to category 1 in one game. Congratulations Terry this is the highest score ever in a San Javier Golf Society match. In second place was Steve Millgate on 32 points and third was Ray Bryant on 31 points.
Our best guest on the day was Ian Robertson with 34 points who has just paid his membership fee and will be playing as a member soon. As with every game we had a nearest the pin prize on all par 3’s and these were won by Steve Millgate, Alex McLennan, George Dean, and Charlie Chaplin, well done to all winners and everyone who played.
We didn’t have a prize for the “who lost the most balls” at La Serena but an admission by one of our members to me later was 14, and 3 of those were donated by a playing partner.

The next game is on 22nd January at Alicante San Juan with a coach from Escuela de Golf. Get your name down now and pay by noon on Saturday 20th.
NB Members please check notice board or our web page www.sanjaviergolfsociety.co.uk for winter knockout round 1 draw.

Report Alicante San Juan 20th November

I didn’t know how I did it but I had the members at the Escuela de Golf at 8.15am ready to go for a day out at Alicante San Juan – but no coach! By 8.45am several people were panicking that we would not get there on time but I had everything planned to the second! The coach arrived, we loaded up and were on our way before 9am. The traffic on the motorway was almost non existent and we arrived at the course at 10.15 in plenty of time for our first tee off at 10.30.

There were 56 players on the day and the first 20 were off the 10th tee whilst the remainder started on the 1st tee at 11am. The four balls had been drawn on the Saturday before and everyone was made aware of their tee time and their handicap on the coach on the way so that there were no problems, that is except for the few who were turning up by car. One of our members decided that following the coach was too slow so decided to overtake and get there before us, bad move, he had gotten the wrong directions and found himself on the way to Benidorm before being able to turn around. He managed to join his 4 ball half way down the 10th fairway, only 5 minutes late.

The weather had been ordered for the day as, dry, sunny, warm and calm and that is just what we got, with everyone in buggies there was no excuse for slow play, added to which the Captain had spoken on the coach regarding this as it is a constant complaint from members. There were some good scores on the day but I must mention one of my playing partners, “Lucky Eddie” as he is now known, managed to chip in from 45 metres on his 1st, and followed that with a 40ft putt on the next. The best score of the day of 39 points came from a guest, Paul Richards, who was playing the course for the first time. Paul will be joining the Society in the New Year so his application form will be scrutinised closely by the handicap secretary.

The competition was an individual stableford in 3 categories and the results were as follows:-

Cat. 1 Winner Barry Floyd 37 pts
2nd Ian Earey 36 pts
3rd Bob Marksman 33 pts

Cat. 2 Winner Chris Hulme 34 pts
2nd Geoff Green 33 pts on count back
3rd John Grant 33 pts

Cat. 3 Winner Paul Davison 35 pts
2nd Graham Sherlock 34 pts
3rd Christine Long 32 pts

Christine has been playing with us for about 6 months and has never won anything at golf and has requested a new BMW as her prize for 3rd place, sorry Christine you can put a deposit down on one with your winnings!

Nearest the pins were won by Terry Allin, Bob Gallard, Bob Marksman, Alan Masters and Alan Ross.
Congratulations to all who played, the presentation evening will be on Tuesday 28th at The Clubhouse at 7.30pm

Report Altorreal Match 8th November

Sponsored by Clinica Dental in El Algar

This was not only one of our monthly competitions but also the quarter final of the Summer Knockout Competition. There was serious concern over whether this game was going to take place or not. At 4pm on the previous day the course was flooded and a decision to open the course the following day would be taken at 8am Wednesday. I had numerous phone calls asking if the game was on but only 3 people didn’t turn up which left 62 members and guests to enjoy what turned out to be a very pleasant day to play golf.

The first two four balls out were the quarter finalist of the summer knockout which was a match play format so they would not be held up. With a 10:16 first tee it was important that everyone got away as quickly as possible and our thanks go to Mike McDonald who acted as starter on the day and did a fantastic job. The course was playing long as there was no run on from drives after all that rain and with long grass infront of the greens the ball was forever stopping short, nevertheless there were some very good scores recorded. In Category 1 we had to wait for almost the last 4 ball to come in for our winner, Bob Marksman with an excellent 39 points (and he missed a birdie putt on the 18th) followed by Alan Masters in second place on 36 points, third place was Derek Cox with 34 points. This is good scoring when you realise that between the three of them they only had a combined handicap of 14!

Category 2 saw a new name in 1st place, that of Chris Hulme with 38 points, in second came Dave Sutton on 36 points (recently returned from 6 months in the UK) and straight back into the winners circle. In 3rd place Roger Mylchreest with 34 points.

Category again had high scores and this was excellent golf on their parts as of the 1st November the Society had reduced handicaps from the maximum 36 to 28 for men. In 1st place, Bill Bailey with 38 points, 2nd was Graham Sherlock on 37 points and in 3rd place Jan Floyd with 36 points. The handicap secretary has got a bit of work to do this week.

The results of the quarter finals of the summer knockout competition were

Bob Gallard beat Barry Floyd on the 18th
Neil Robinson beat Mark Watts 5 and 3
George Dean beat Peter Fleet 1 up
Paul Matthews beat Joyce Armstrong on the last

Semi final to be played on Wednesday 22nd November at Altorreal

Congratulations to all who played, our next game is on Monday 20th at Alicante San Juan. There is a free coach leaving the range at 9am prompt.

A credit card size membership card will be left for you at the bar as soon as it has been made along with your copy of the Constitution and Rules book a San Javier Golf Society Bag Tag (whilst stocks last) and your Society Shirt (please state size required).

We Play as a Society twice a month, usually the 2nd Monday of each month and the last Wednesday of each month mainly at Hacienda del Alamo Golf Course near Fuente Alamo, Altorreal Golf Course near Murcia, Roda Golf Course near Los Alcazares and La Serena Golf Course in Los Alcazares. We play mostly Stableford competitions but from time to time we change the venue and the format. Recently we have played a couple of Texas Scrambles and a four ball better ball. To play in a match, put your name on the list on the board at the Clubhouse or if you can’t get there you can contact us by email though the web page on www.sanjaviergolfsociety.co.uk and we will put your name on for you.

Green Fees are collected on the Saturday before the match. The Committee are at the Escuela de Golf from 10.30am til 12.00 midday when the draw takes place. If you are not able to be there you can either leave the money in an envelope behind the bar with the amount and your name on it or ask someone else to come and pay on your behalf. Anyone who has not paid the green fee by 12.00 midday will not be put in the draw unless this has been previously arranged with a committee member.

New Members of the Society playing in Society competitions must submit three cards before they can win a category prize. Until then they are treated as guests and are eligible for the best guest prize only. After three cards are submitted the Handicap Secretary will give you a society handicap which will be used in all competitions and will be adjusted accordingly. Category 1 is 0-10 h/cap, Category 2 is 11 – 20 h/cap and Category 3 is over 21 h/cap.

Presentation Evenings are at the end of each month where we present prizes to the winners of the games played in that month. Normally held at Escuela de Golf with a buffet and some form of entertainment. However, sometimes we are sponsored by bars or restaurants so we have the presentation on those premises. Prizes must be collected on the night or forfeited.

Sponsorship is always welcome as golf in the Costa Calida is expensive, from the offer of sandwiches at a Bar for a presentation evening to donations of money for prizes to larger sums for the league team. This year we are pleased to have League Team Sponsors from Clinica Dental, Virgen de Los LLanos, in El Algar and Sun and Beach Properties, San Javier, these sponsors have their names and logos on the team shirts. In return our games are reported on in the local newspapers with the Sponsors names and logos displayed. So if you know of a potencial sponsor or business, please let us know.

Report and Results of October 9th Hacienda Game

An early start on Monday for this game with a 9 o’clock first tee. You either love or hate this course but we still managed to get 43 players there with one no show. The weather was perfect for golf with bright sunshine and not too hot. The big plus for the society was that previous maintenance work had been done on the course and the greens were the best we had seen them, true flat and well cut. This made a big difference and produced some good scores. Shot of the day was by Ken Beever on the 16th Hole when his second, hit the flag from 175 metres and rolled around the hole ending up right on the lip, an excellent birdie but the closest to an eagle I have seen on this hole.
Playing in 3 categories plus a guest category, 37 points was the top score of the day.
I (Bob Gallard) won category 1 with 36 points followed by Teo Ledezma, who claims he would have won if he had not lost his ball on the 3rd which left him with only 35 pts. In 3rd place was John Roberts with 32 pts.
Category 2 was won by Joan Williams with 37pts, (look out Joan the new handicap secretary is going to cut you) in 2nd place was Alan Ross on 35pts and in 3rd was Geoff Timberlake with a very creditable 34 pts.
Category 3 saw two new names in the winner’s circle, members who have been with us for sometime but have never quite made it until today, so special congratulations go to Arthur Fry who has been ill for some time and has made a remarkable comeback to score 37pts. In 2nd place was Maria Mylchreest on 28pts and in 3rd was another new name in the prizes that of Nike Hovell who has progressed fantastically to score 27pts on such a long and difficult course.
Our guest prize went to T Allen who scored 36pts on countback from Jim Silcock. There were 4 Nearest the Pin prizes and they were won by,
Hole 5 Geoff Timberlake, Hole 8 Ken Beever, Hole 12 Paul Matthews and Hole 15 Joan Williams.
The results of the 12 Hole Academy Competition were in 1st place Roger Reid, 2nd Audrey Smith and 3rd Anne Braithwaite.
Congratulations to all who played it was a very enjoyable day.
The next game is on Wednesday 25th October at La Serena with a 10am Shotgun start, but please be there by 9am.
Presentation evening will be on Saturday 28th October at the Escuela de Golf San Javier with free buffet for players and 5 euros for their guests, and entertainment by “Smithy”.

Albacete Trip Report

San Javier Golf Society
Albacete Trip 12th – 14th September 2006

An early start on Tuesday for some as the coach left the Escuela de Golf at 8 am, we had a pick up on the way to make 50 members and wives making this trip. The weather wasn’t at its best on this day and as we were going direct to the course at Las Piniallas we watched in anticipation of a good day. 29 golfers took part in the first days’ competition and for most it was the first time they had played at Albacete.
A draw had been made and everyone was aware of their partners for the day so on arrival there were no hiccups and buggies and trolleys were collected with ease and there was even time for a coffee before we teed off at midday.

The clouds were gathering as we teed off and it held off raining for about an hour but then we were treated to something we don’t often get on the Costas - rain! It wasn’t too bad and only lasted for an hour or so before the sun came out and we were able to finish the round in the dry. I think the weather affected the scoring because no one managed to play to par and our winner, Daniel Marshall managed a creditable 35 points. Daniel has always played well at Albacete and did exactly the same last year on his first day. Roger Mylchreest came second on count back from Peter Fleet. The course was in great condition and is always a delight to play as you are not bombarded with noise and distractions from building sites etc.

Having collected the cards we made our way back to the hotel just outside the city centre for a shower and dinner. Some players had an early night in preparation for the following days competition but most made their way to the bar to swap stories of their round after dinner where they stayed until the beer ran out – literally!

Day 2 was again at Las Piniallas and was for the Buddys Memorial Trophy sponsored by Matt and Nicky Hood, owners of Buddys Bar in Santiago de la Ribera. Matt and Daniel both played in the competition which was inaugurated last year. Defending champion Geoff Lee was also present in an attempt to hold onto the Trophy, the weather had changed again and it was a superb day and with a 10am first tee it was soon very warm. Unfortunately we were playing behind some very slow players of the Piniallas Club and this became very frustrating for some of our members, however, we had nowhere else to go so we enjoyed the peace and quiet of such a lovely golf course. You would have thought that the scores would be better than day 1 with the change in the weather, but no, there were some very low scores and even the eventual winner only managed 34 points. Neil Robinson who again claimed to have a few drinks the night before was 4 points ahead of Roger Mylchreest’s 30 points in second place again.

After the game we went straight back to the Hotel where at 7.30 pm we held the prize giving for both games. Alex McLennan, (Captain) presented the prizes for the first day and Matt and Nicky Hood presented prizes and the Buddys Memorial Trophy. After dinner most returned to the bar but some of us took a taxi into Albacete to see the Feria (fairground) which is an enormous event in the centre of the city. Thursday morning saw some weary faces as we travelled home after a very enjoyable few days away. A full list of winners will be published at the clubhouse.
Finally our thanks as a society went to Santiago, Director of Golf at Las Piniallas for his hospitality and assistance in making our stay and golf run well.
