Report and results from Alicante San Juan Game

May 19th at San Juan Alicante
The Society had been waiting to play this course for some time so when the day finally arrived I prayed it would be fine. We had put on a coach to take the members from the Clubhouse to the course because having been there once before and found it a difficult place to find we didn’t want players not being there on time, so with 47 players we set off at 9 o’clock for Alicante.

Of all the players there were only about 4 of us who had played the course before so expectations of the course had been fuelled by a few enthusiastic members. We arrived in plenty of time for our first tee time and after booking in and allocation of buggies there was time for a coffee or practice before making our way to the first tee. We had been advised that there were six temporary greens and because of this we were each given a voucher to spend in the bar or pro shop as compensation. This I thought was a very nice gesture as having been one of the few to have played the course recently had found the temporary greens to be of a very high standard and the only downside was that the holes had been shortened, anyway away we went. Having buggies with satellite navigation helps with the yardages on a strange course and being allowed to drive on the fairways was also a bonus. It was a bit slow for some of our members but most got round without too much of a hold up. The weather stayed fine and it became a very pleasant day.

Back in the clubhouse I had the job of collecting the cards again as Don (Handicap Sec) was on holiday again, I discovered a small problem in that the slope value on the back of the cards was different to the one issued by the pro shop so adjustments had to be made.

Some really good scores came in from players who had not seen the course before and everyone enjoyed their round and commented how good it was and when could we come again. As we didn’t know the slope value beforehand it was decided to only have two categories, 21 and above in cat. 2 and 20 and below in cat.1. The results were as follows:-

Cat 1 winner Paul Matthews with 39 points
2nd Ray Newcomb with 37 points
3rd Dave Williams with 35 points on countback from Ashley Bates

Cat. 2 winner Joan Williams with 40 points
2nd Ian Smith with 34 points
3rd John McHugh with 32 points

Nearest the pins were won by Ray Newcomb, Mavis Clayton and Joan Williams

Joan said later that she really liked the course and couldn’t wait to play it again eventhough she would be severely cut for scoring so well. Ian Smith in second place was an even more remarkable score as he hasn’t been playing golf very long, obviously all that practice at the range is paying off. Congratulations to all who played.

Next game is at Hacienda del Alamo on Monday 12th June, details on the board at the clubhouse.

Captains Day at Hacienda del Alamo May 8th

Captains Day,
at
Hacienda del Alamo Monday 8th May 2006

What a fantastic day it was when, San Javier Golf Society celebrated Captains Day at Hacienda del Alamo, after days of cloud and rain, the sun came out and with a gentle breeze it was perfect for golf.

Captain Alex McLennan welcomed over 80 members and guests to play a Medal Competition for the low handicappers, a Stableford for the over 18 handicappers and a Ladies High Handicap competition on the Academy Course. With so many players we had two start times on the first and tenth tees and with Alex not playing in his own competition it was a very welcoming sight to see him and Ann on the tenth handing out cold drinks and fruit to keep us going.

Invited guests were Billy Sim, Director of Golf at Hacienda, who unfortunately was called away on important business minutes before we arrived. Mike Maloney, Head of Golf at the new Roda Golf Course near Los Alcazares, who came along and played, representing our sponsor on the day, Phil Davies of 1car1 who also played. Both said they thoroughly enjoyed the day, if not the golf.

The course was looking very green although hollow tining of the front nine greens last week had left them a bit bumpy but the back nine were perfect. With the weather perfect, as it always seems to be when we play at Hacienda, we looked like we were in for some good scores.

There were 20 players in the Medal competition with our lowest handicapper, Alan Masters off 4 and another six players off 10 and below. The scoring was very good with the winner Neil Robinson having a net 70, 2 under par, playing off 7. After the game Neil said he didn’t think he had played particularly well as he was feeling the effects of a very late night, however, he was two shots ahead of second place Ashley Bates who shot a nett 72 off 13. Third place was Alan Masters who finished with a nett 74, just two over, his excuse for not winning was that he doesn’t like the course but because it was captains’ day he did his best. Congratulations to all three for outstanding scoring. Other scores of note were Roger Mylchreest, Mike Barker and David Barnes all on nett 75.

The stableford competition was not categorised and therefore handicaps ranged from 18 to 40 (including the slope), it was a large field so the scores would be varied and they were. The winner was Keith Powell with 38 points playing off 29 –“ for the last time” our handicap secretary was heard to say. Second place went to Alan Ross with 37 points off 26 and 3rd to Geoff Green with 36 points off 21. Very well done by all three players. Two other scores worth a mention were Brian Kettle and Graham Haywood with 34 points.

There was a best ladies prize on the day and this went to Maria Mylchreest who had the highest score among the seven ladies playing in the Stableford competition. There were 4 nearest the pins and the longest drive went to Mick Barker who I played with and his drive was only inches in front of John Roberts who is a good 30 years his senior!

There were eight ladies playing on the academy course and the winner was Lyn Gallard by only 1 shot from Margaret McBride in second place.
The presentation of prizes took place at the Captains Dinner at La Perdiz Restaurant on Saturday evening. There was a marvellous turnout for this event and Alex dressed in his highland regalia hosted the evening. The prizes for the Captains Day were presented by Ann McLennan wife of the captain and further prizes of the Winter and Summer Knockout trophies were presented by sponsors Hazel and Maurice of Alhambra Villas. A big thank you go to them for their continued support of the Society in these two events. There was a raffle during the evening which contained many prizes donated by members of the society and quick thank you to some of them including Matt and Nicky Hood of Buddys Bar, Neil Robinson and Nike Hovell of Orihuela Golf Specialist and Ian Earey member of the society. A total of 565 euros was raised during the evening.
Although our invited guests were unable to make the evening, it was a great success and the meal was excellent. A number of photos taken by members Jan Floyd and Margaret Gilbey will be posted on the website shortly, our thanks to them for this.

Report April 26th game OUR FIRST HOLE IN ONE

At our last game at Altorreal on 26th April, George Payne "the cowboy" made San Javier Golf Society history with the first hole in one.
Our congratulations go to George for his hole in one on the 5th at Altorreal and he didn’t even see it go in the hole as the flag was on the top tier, nevertheless, a fantastic achievement and we all helped him celebrate at the prize giving evening last Friday.

Back to the game though and as normal 3 categories covering 52 players and guests. Everyone arrived on time and with Captain Alex taking his turn as starter everyone was away on time. It was a bit slow but it was such a nice day there weren’t many complaints. The course is looking good now and although the greens were a bit slow we were aware of major games being played at the weekend so obviously they weren’t prepared for us.

Category 1 had some of our best players competing and off low handicaps, the winner was Alan Masters with 36 points followed by Jimmy Travaskiss with 35 points and Bob Marksman 3rd with 34 points.

Category 2 Joyce Armstrong took the win with 37 points, Ray Bryant on count back 2nd with 32 points from Mike McDonald 3rd .

The best scores of the day were the first three in category 3, Julie Eyles, who said at the beginning of the day that she hadn’t played for six months, scored a fantastic 38 points to take first place, right behind her was Barbara Heath on 37 points and then Keith Powell 3rd with 36 points.

I must apologise to everyone for forgetting the nearest the pin markers but quick thinking by the first 4 ball out, with a piece of card, led to George Dean taking 2 ntp’s and of course George Payne with his hole in one, the other. Our best guest prize went to Vince Gibbons who scored 36 points.

The prize giving presentation took place at Escuela de Golf in San Javier on Friday evening 28th April, attended by over 70 people. Prizes were presented for all three games played in April, including the Texas Scramble played at Altorreal on the 4th and Individual Stableford at Hacienda del Alamo mo on the 10th.

Our next game will be the Captains Day at Hacienda del Alamo on 8th May which will coincide with the Captains Dinner at La Perdiz restaurant Pozo Aledo on Saturday the 13th. Green fees will be taken on Saturday 6th and also payment for the dinner. Please make sure your name is on the list in the clubhouse. The month of May also includes the Alicante game on the 19th, this is restricted to 52 players and includes a free coach from the range. The list is almost full so get your name down as soon as possible if you want to go and play one of the best prepared courses on the Costa Blanca.

For everyones information the Escuela de Golf is gearing up for the summer with a new programme of activities which includes a new female teaching pro which brings the teaching staff to 5. Some of the bar prices have been reduced, the restaurant has a new daily menu, Sunday lunch with jazz band and regular Saturday afternoon barbeques and games. Quiz night on Wednesdays starting soon. So come along and join us. Telephone 610 775 151 for bookings and more information.
NB. Due to Arsenal winning through to the Champions League Final on May 17th our Race night has had to be cancelled. We will reschedule as soon as we can. Sorry.

Report Texas Scramble Altorreal 4th April

After a few mishaps and two no shows, (one thought the game was on the next day, the other was at hospital with his wife,) we managed to get reserves in and play a texas scramble. I have to say that we had a few new members playing for the first time with the society and they were not intimidated by the course at all. In fact Audrey Smith is to be congratulated for playing her first ever competitive game and being in the side finishing second.

The course at Altorreal has improved greatly and the weather was fantastic so it was all laid out for a good days golf. 47 members and guests eventually played leaving a 3 ball at the end. Competition was very tight and our President Barry Butterworth, who was out first with his team, came in with a creditable 3 over par gross but eventually finished last but one, after holding the clubhouse lead for all of 10 minutes. Each team was made up of 1 x cat.1 player, 2 x cat 2 players and 1 x cat 3 player as far as possible and the average handicap for each team was around 9.9 so anything below par was going to be good.

The winning side were the only team to beat par by 1 and their handicap of 9.4 gave them a nett 61.6 so our congratulations go to Derek Cox, Barbara Heath, Ian Barclay and Alex McBride. 2nd place was won on countback on the back 9 and went to the team of John Roberts, Fred Faulkner, Joan Williams and Audrey Smith with a gross 73, nett 62.3. In 3rd place were the team of Bob Gallard, Keith Davies, Charlie Robinson and Robert Metherall with the same score. The next four teams were all within 1 shot of 3rd place and congratulations go to all who played.

Everyone I spoke to after the game said how much they enjoyed the day and this format of competition. Our next game at Altorreal will be on Wednesday 26th April – see you there.

Report on Hacienda Match 10th April

Our Society is growing week by week now, our reputation as a well organised friendly society is spreading and at this game we had 4 new members and 8 guests making over 50 players on the 18 hole course and in our high handicap section, mainly ladies, we had 12 playing the Academy course.

The day was again perfect for us and everyone was looking forward to a good days golf, there were no delays and no problems with the 4 balls so everyone got away on time. The first 4 ball set off with a new member teeing off, hitting the ladies tee marker and his ball rebounding back behind the men’s tee, making his second shot a bit further than it should have been! Overall we had a good spread of players in each 4 ball which was commented on at the end of the game by one of our higher handicap players as “its good for us, it encourages better play with better players”.

The course was in good condition as is expected at Hacienda, but as I have said before in the reports, the course can play difficult especially when the wind gets up. On this day the wind emerged around 2 pm and until the 15th was in your face but from 16 in it was behind and for some became more of a nuisance rather than a help by adding yards to drives which ended up in bunkers. We played the 3 categories and at the end of the day only 3 players managed more than 36 points, all being cat. 1 players I might add.

Cat. 3 was won by Joan Williams with 34 points from Maria Mylchreest in 2nd with 32 points and Terry Braithwaite 3rd with 30 points.
Cat. 2 Don McNeil scored a 36 points, 2 points ahead of Geoff Lee on 34 points with 3rd place to Rod Darby with 30 points.
Cat. 1 was a close fought contest and the first place result took some sorting out as Ashley Bates and Derek Cox recorded the same score of 38 points. After a long scrutiny of the cards for countback it was finally decided on the last 15 holes giving Ashley Bates the win and Derek Cox 2nd. Right behind them was Bob Marksman on 37 points to take 3rd place.
We had 4 nearest the pin prizes and uncannily the last 4 ball out took all 4, Neil Robinson took the 5th, I took the 8th and 15th and Ian Earey took the 12th.
Congratulations to all who played and now our handicap secretary has returned from his holidays the complete score sheet will be posted on the notice board in the Clubhouse along with any handicap changes.

Presentation of prizes for all the April games will be on Friday 28th April, 7.30pm at Escuela de Golf, with a free buffet for players and 5 € for any guests. Entertainment will be by “Smithy” guitarist and singer.

Report on Hacienda Match 13th February

REPORT BY BOB GALLARD

What a fantastic day for golf in February, 58 members and guests turned out for this individual stableford competition. The Hacienda course was in superb condition again and appears to be going from strength to strength. This is good for the Society as the following week we had a Charity Day there in aid of the AECC Contra Cancer.

As ever the course was the beater of many and beaten by few. As I write this report every month its about time that I got my name on the winners list so here goes.
Cat. 1- it wasn’t even close, I (Bob Gallard) scored 39 points and had a day where everything went straight in the hole almost first putt. 2nd place went to one of our new members Ashley Bates with 33 points and 3rd was John Grant on 32 points. The greens were fast and true and the consensus back at the clubhouse was that if you didn’t aim straight at the hole you weren’t going to get down in one.

Cat. 2 was a close call and the handicap secretary had to look again at the cards for countback for all places. In the end, Geoff Green won with 29 points from Bob Bushnell, 29 points. 3rd place went to Geoff Timberlake with 25 points from Fred Faulkner on the same.

There was a better winning score in Cat. 3 as another of our new members, Alan Ross came home with 35 points followed by Joan Williams with 29 points and 3rd was decided on countback again with Ray Bryant 28 points beating Rosemary Grant on the back nine.

There were some 15 new members and guests playing but our best guest prize was awarded to 15 year old Sean Masterman, who scored a very creditable 32 points. However, this was awarded on countback as Helmut Rehm scored the same.
There were also four NTP prizes and they went to Rosemary Grant, Bill Robb, Dave Sutton and Ushi Rehm.

There were 5 ladies playing in the 12 hole competition on the Academy Course and just to keep it in the family, the winner was Lyn Gallard.

The Prizegiving will be held on Saturday 18th March after the AGM which starts at 2pm. The venue will be the Esquela de Golf, San Javier, the home of the San Javier Golf Society. Members, this is an important date for your diary so please note and make sure you can attend.

San Javier Golf Society, welcomes everyone to their home at Esquela de Golf where people can enjoy the facilities of a 17 bay driving range, professional tuition and the services of Neil Robinson, professional Club Maker and Repairer, or you can sit and enjoy a drink or a meal in the bar or restaurant or on the terrace overlooking the range. There are also special evenings at the restaurant so look out for the details. Come and visit us, we can be found in San Javier, 1 km from the turning off the N332 opposite the Galp Petrol station, just the other side of the motorway.
