Our first competition of the year played at Hacienda was a good one. Not only did 40 players turn out for the 18 hole competition there were also 5 ladies in the 12 hole competition on the Academy Course. The weather was kind to us and the course was in great condition. The greens were lightening fast and many players struggled to get to grips with them. After a bit of a hiccup with the start everyone managed to get away not too far behind schedule.
As I have said on many occasions, Hacienda is not an easy course, it can frustrate low handicappers and demolish high handicappers. This was one of those days when scoring was low and no one ended up being cut for their score. It would seem that when Dave Thomas designed this course he knew exactly where to put the bunkers for Society players of all levels, personally I resembled one of Rommels men spending time on almost every hole in a bunker or two!
We had a few guests and new members playing not only for the first time with the Society but the first time at Hacienda too. Comments on the course were positive and everyone said they enjoyed it. The last 4 ball out consisted of the Captain, Alex McLennan, John Roberts (Mr. Steady) Mike McDonald (summer knockout champ) and Ray Bryant, John apparently was having one of his days and could be seen posing after his drives, so much so that Mike asked if he wanted mirrors put up on the tees so that he could see himself? It didn’t bother JR who went on to post a score of 31 to win Cat. 1.
Cat. 2 was won by Jeff Lee with 33 points from Bob Bushnell 31 and Gerry Heggarty with 28.
Cat. 3 saw the highest scores of the day which just goes to show how the course can be played as Keith Powell scored 36 points, Don McNeil came 2nd with 34 and George (the Cowboy) Payne was 3rd with 32 points.
The best guest prize goes to Jim Allison, who has just applied to join the Society, with 33 points.
The winner of the ladies competition was Ann Braithwaite.
Our Sponsors Sun and Beach Properties have provided prizes for the winners and also four nearest the pins which went to Maria Mylchreest, Tony Ellsworth, Mike Barker and George Dean. Congratulations to all winners, a list of all scores are below.
Next game is at Altorreal on 25th January names on the list at the clubhouse, fees to be paid by 12.30pm Saturday 21st details on the website www.sanjaviergolfsociety.co.uk

Altorreal Golf Course
Wednesday 21st December 2005
Sponsored by Go Insure It
What a surprise, just when I thought lots of the members had gone away to the UK, 45 turned out for a great days golf at Altorreal. The club have turned the course around for the time being so we made our way to the 10th tee. I really don’t know how we do it but the weather was again on our side with a light breeze and blue skies. The first tee time was 10.32 so we were hitting straight into the sun, fortunately the pin had been placed on the left of the green and the bunker was taken out of play. Play was slow for some reason and it was almost a 5 hour round for some of us, but the company was good and some good scores were being recorded.
The society played in three categories with cat.1 being 1–18 handicappers, Cat. 2 and 3 were cut to allow an even number of players in each. Our Captain, Alex McLennan was drawn last out and managed to return a score of 37 points matching Alan Masters who was in the Clubhouse hours before. Alex won on countback and Bob Marksman finishing with 36 points came 3rd. Tony Stapleton is worthy of a mention as it is some time since he has scored 35 points. Cat. 2 was also closely fought with Maura Parsons winning on 34 points and George Payne and Joyce Armstrong finishing on 32 points, countback put George in 2nd place and Joyce in 3rd. Cat. 3 had nine ladies in it so it was no surprise to see them taking 1st and 2nd places. Anne Sutton with the top score of the day 38 points was followed by Barbara Heath on 33 points. Third place did go to a man and Tony Patterson only lost out to Barbara on countback with the same 33 points. Our best guest prize went to Sandra Twentyman also with 33 points. Our Sponsors Go Insure It also provided prizes for nearest the pin on all four par 3’s and the winners were George Payne, Dave Tew, Barrie Floyd and Ray Peacey.
The presentation evening/Christmas party was held at the Mount Everest Indian Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada on Friday 23rd December and we had a fantastic turnout. Including our invited sponsors Dave and Teresa King of Mar Menor Alarmas who sponsored the earlier December match at Hacienda and Go Insure It, represented by Terry Potter, there were over 100 people present. Our sponsors presented the prizes for their respective sponsored games. The evening began with Tony M singing and encouraging dancing, the Indian buffet meal followed with most guests going back for seconds. During the evening over 600 raffle tickets were sold for the many prizes donated by the members and the committee and to finish off the evening there was a Christmas quiz.
Next game is Monday 9th January at Hacienda del Alamo, sponsored by Sun & Beach, San Javier, list is on the board at the clubhouse.
The Committee wish a very Happy New Year to everyone in the San Javier Golf Society, all their family and friends and a special thank you to the Sponsors who have helped keep the society going over the past year.

Well, you can tell its getting close to Christmas because lost of our members have gone to the UK to spend Christmas with their families and only 30 members played in this competition. With temperatures dropping now it was a very chilly start at just after 9am, but it soon warmed up and with no wind, again it was a perfect day for golf. The course was in superb condition and continues to be a challenge for all.
As in previous competitions at Hacienda we played an individual stableford in 3 categories and cat. 1 had its usual finalists. Alex McLennan, (Captain) scored his usual 36 points but I, Bob Gallard (Vice Captain), could only manage 30 points and fell into 3rd place. Mr. Steady, John Roberts took 2nd place with 31 points even after complaining that he couldn’t get on with the greens. Cat. 2 winner, Dave Sutton came in with the days highest score of 37 points with Brian Kettle on 35 a close second. George Payne, recently promoted to cat. 2 has made his way onto the 3rd place rostrum for the first time – obviously his hours of perseverance on “the range” paid off as he now has the title of “Mr. Cowboy”.
The winner of cat. 3 was Keith Powell with 32 points followed by Maria Mylchreest on countback with the same score of 32. Third place went to our starter at Hacienda, Alex McBride with 25 points. Alex has lost out recently over the last few competitions to his wife Margaret who has been taking the family prizes, nice to see him take a place in an individual stableford competition for the first time.
We had 5 guests playing so the best guest prize went to (soon to be a member of San Javier) Dave Portlock (TATS) with 33 points.
Our sponsors for the day were Mar Menor Alarmas who recently moved into their new premises in Santiago de la Ribera (968 33 55 70) and provided the prizes for all the category winners and the four nearest the pin prizes on the par 3 holes. Our thanks go to Dave and Teresa King for their support of the Society. The presentation for this competition and the next game at Altorreal on Wednesday 21st December, will be held on Friday 23rd December at the Mount Everest Indian Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada where Dave and Teresa will be presenting the prizes to the winners of the Hacienda game.
The committee of the San Javier Golf Society wish all members and sponsors a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Report on November 30th Altorreal Game
|

Sponsored by The Joyeria and Trophy Shop
in Pilar de la Horadada
My apologies to members for the short space of time between tee offs at this game, we had 60 players in 15 teams and only 10 tee times available so we had to bunch up a bit, however there were no problems and everyone got away ok. The teams had been drawn the previous Saturday and all 15 teams were within 2 shots of each other. This planning aforethought led to a very close competition and provided plenty of opportunity for our high handicap members to get a few tips along the way from the better players.
Texas Scramble requires that each player plays at least 4 tee shots, with each side having one category 3 player with a handicap of over 30, but with one or two over 40, team captains were having to be very canny when to use their tee shots. Everyone enjoyed their round and favourable comments were made by many on the fairness of the draw. In previous games like this we have had a number of teams come in with gross under par scores and this game was no exception as the first 8 teams came in at par or better and it was very tense waiting in the club house for the teams to come in.
The winners, Barrie Floyd, Barry Butterworth, Atholl Robb and Margaret McBride, carded a 3 under par 69 and when their handicap was taken off, had a net 59.2. Second place went to Dave Tew, John Colling, Ivor Parsons and Jan Floyd with a gross 71 net 60.1. In 3rd place was Bob Marksman, John Maire, Joyce Armstrong and Barbara Quigley, this team had the lowest handicap of only 8.5 and finished on a gross 69, net 60.5 only 0.4 behind the 2nd place. There were also prizes for the 4 nearest the pins on the par 3 holes.
The presentation evening for both the November games was held at the Anchor Bar in Pilar de la Horadada, Alan and Diane Comish were the sponsors of our previous game at Hacienda on the 14th November and they kindly provided a buffet and prizes for that competition. The bar, just off Calle Major had been closed for 18 months and Alan and his wife have now refurbished it into a sports bar, (Alan is a big Liverpool fan) and they are now open every day including Sunday for lunches. Alan says “trade is picking up fortunately because after his first 16 hours of being open he had only taken 10 euros!” A big thank you to them from the Society for their sponsorship. The bar was full to overflowing with members on Friday night and the prizes for this game, donated by La Joyeria and Trophy Shop, were presented by Alex McLennan, the Captain. Presentation of prizes for Hacienda game were presented by Alan Comish. There was a raffle held during the evening making 140 euros for Society funds.
Our next matches in December are : Monday 12th at Hacienda del Alamo sponsored by Mar Menor Alarms and Wednesday 21st at Altorreal sponsored by Go Insure It. Following the Altorreal game on Friday 23rd December there will be the Society Xmas Party and Prizegiving to be held at the Mount Everest Indian Restaurant in Pilar de la Horadada from 7.30pm. Guests and family are welcome to join us at a cost of 10 euros, there will be entertainment, a quiz and a Christmas raffle during the evening. For those of you who don’t eat Indian food, the owners have agreed to provide english dishes at no extra cost.

44 Players in this Stableford Competition and 6 ladies in the 12 hole high handicap competition was an excellent turn out considering the weather had been awful the night before and most people woke up to more rain. On my way to the course, with the weather improving, I received a phone call from one of the members saying that she couldn’t play as she had no wet weather clothing. I said “its not raining here so come along and play”. She believed me and turned up, well I’m not known for my weather forecasting but on this occasion I got it right, not only did the rain stay away but later on the sun came out and it was quite warm for November. Everyone enjoyed their day and a big thank you must go to Billy Sim, Director of Golf at Hacienda for presenting the course in such good condition after so much rain had fallen in the previous week. Members were even allowed to use buggies, which is a must for some of the “oldies”, so long as they stuck to the paths and fairways.
With 3 categories playing in an individual stableford competition with perfect weather we were expecting some good scores but again the course seems to beat even the best. Top score of the day was 36 points by our own Captain, Alex McLennan with the Vice Captain, Bob Gallard right behind with 35 points, both playing off 11 so there was some friendly rivalry there.
Full list of winners is below
Category 1 1st Alex McLennan, 2nd Bob Gallard, 3rd Dave Sutton
Category 2 1st Atholl Robb, 2nd Barry Butterworth, 3rd Geoff Green
Category 3 1st Maria Mylchreest, 2nd Graham Haywood, 3rd Donald MacNeill
Guest 1st Ann Gearey
NTP´s Anne Sutton Atholl Robb Bren Standell Roger Mylchreest
The next game is on Wednesday 30th November at Altorreal – a Texas Scramble, list on notice board in the clubhouse. This will be followed by a presentation evening for both of the months’ matches on Friday 2nd December at The Anchor Bar, Pilar de la Horadada who were the sponsors for this game.
Members please note that the new society shirts have arrived and are on sale at 25 euros each – please see any committee member or ask at the clubhouse.

Report on October 26th Match at Altorreal
|

We had 58 players booked for the day, which with a late start needed to get
underway without any problems. If everyone turns up and on time there are
no problems but our starter on the first tee encountered a few hiccups but
still managed to keep everyone moving. The Society rules will be reinforced
at our next presentation evening so that we don’t face these issues in
future.
That apart it was a good days golf, Category 1 medal players took advantage
of the conditions to shoot some low scores and will pay the price with cuts
to their handicaps. Ian Earey had a most impressive round of a net 68 with
Bob Marksman 1 shot behind on 69.
Category 2 and 3 played an Individual Stapleford and high scores were
recorded for the winners, Les Carr, who had obtained our sponsorship for the
game from his employers, Medsea Estates, scored 41 pts and was the clear
winner in Cat. 2.
Cat. 3 had some 15 players competing and one of our new members, Joan Williams came in 1st place with 38pts.
The presentation evening was held at the Esquela de Golf in San Javier and
although a few drops of rain threatened to move the presentation inside, 80+
members and friends enjoyed the prize giving, followed by a buffet a quiz and
a raffle. The two main raffle prizes having been donated by members Robert and Judy Metherall (a Paella Dinner Party for 6) and a tray of the famous Bread Pudding from Fran McDonald.
The next game is at Hacienda del Alamo on Monday 14th November, the lists
are on the board in the clubhouse for the main course and the high handicap
game on the 6 hole course.
Green fees to be paid by Saturday 12th November 1pm – society rule is NO PAY, NO PLAY.

Report : Medal / Stapleford Competition July 27th at Hacienda del Alamo Sponsored by Martin O'Neill of The Celt Irish Bar
|

Well, what a turnout for our newly named Society, 50 players in the main competition and 5 ladies in the 12 hole competition. We had decided that category 1 players would play a medal and 2 and 3 a Stapleford. Due to the heat, everyone had a buggy and took plenty of water even for those who started first at 10am it was hot. Some of our players are not used to buggies and poor old Mavis Clayton spent 5 minutes trying to insert the pitch repairer instead of the key into the ignition, never mind Mavis we all understood you weren’t well.
There were a few new members playing with us for the first time as well as first timers on the course. The course itself was in superb condition although as I have stated before not everyone likes it as it’s long and there is no definition to the fairways. Apart from this it was enjoyable and some good scores were recorded.
In category 1 playing medal not everyone had such a good round with one of my playing partners (no names) scoring 12 on the 14th hole – never mind Jimmy- oops!
In category 2 even though not feeling well, Mavis Clayton came home with 36 points to win by 7 from Geoff Timberlake who played his way onto the winners rostrum for the first time with the society. Third place went to George Payne.
Category 3, well this was embarrassing for the winner, Don Busby had only just a week ago agreed to be our new Match and Handicap Secretary and had issued new handicaps for this competition only to go and win it. Congratulations Don and welcome on board the committee. Our thanks go to our retiring Handicap Secretary, Mike Bailey for his hard work during the past year.
This competition we had 14 guests playing with us and our Best Guest Prize went to A Nicholson from Polaris, Torre Pacheco who had 34 points.
The ladies competition was played on the Academy course and they all played off 24, the winner was Jan Floyd, another of our new members.
The full results are as follows:-
Cat.1 Winner Ian Earey net 67
2nd Alex McLennan net 69
3rd Barry Floyd net 75 on countback
4th Bob Gallard net 75
Cat.2 Winner Mavis Clayton 36 stapleford
2nd Geoff Timberlake 29 stapleford
3rd George Payne 28 stapleford
Cat.3 Winner Don Busby 29
2nd Keith Powell 26 on countback
3rd Ray Beck 26
Ladies Prize Jan Floyd
Best Guest A. Nicholson
Nearest the Pins George Dean
Graham Parsons
Ray Peacey
Fred Faulkner
Our thanks go to our sponsor of the day, Martin O'Neill of The Celt Irish Bar in Los Alcazares for his support and the trophies and prizes which he presented on the evening of Friday 29th July where he also laid on a buffet for the members and guests who attended the presentations. The evening was rounded off with a quiz and everyone went home happy.
Next two games for the Society will be played at Altorreal, firstly the quarter finals of the Summer Knockout on Friday 5th August, 10am first tee time, followed by our monthly competition on 31st August.
