La Serena 5th July 2010

They let me write these reports for the Society so long as I don’t mention my performance tooooo often, but as La Serena is not one of my favourite courses I thought my round score of 35 points was quite good, until I got back to the Clubhouse and discovered that Roger McGeagh had scored 45 points - I was really gutted. Well enough about Roger,… only joking, congratulations on a fantastic score. I heard him say he knew he had it in him to do it, he was just waiting for the right moment.

Our competition was in 2 categories and Roger was in Cat2 winning easily by 10 points from Bob Eaton on 35 points. Category 1 was won by Vice Captain and new relief Handicap Secretary Barry Beale with 38 points and second place was between myself and Paul Matthews, both on 35 points, but Paul had the better back 9 so I graciously allowed him 2nd place. Barry did even better on the 9th hole with a “2” which netted him 50 Euros, such a shame it wasn’t on the 3rd hole where I saw George Payne sink a 20ft putt for a “2” but with no prize unfortunately.

La Serena was in excellent condition, apart from the bunkers, previous rain had hardened and flattened the sand to make bunker play very difficult, but as always they weren’t the real problem. WATER, managed to steal around 66 balls from the Society, gladly only 1 of mine. Ian Smith who finished with 20 points admitted that he lost 11 balls in his round and Mick Hardy who has been in the winners circle more often than not over the last month, would not declare the number lost but crashed to a mere 17 points bringing up the rear by 3 points.

There were 4 nearest the pin prizes and they went to:
• Hole 3 Les Doherty
• Hole 6 (second shot) Bob Eaton
• Hole 11 (third shot) Roy Herbert
• Hole 17 Paul Matthews

Talking of nearest the pin, on the first hole I was on the green and asked my playing partner George Payne, to remove the flag for me, he pulled at first and the flag would not come out, then with a bit more effort he removed the flag and the hole liner in one, he blamed the players in front of us for jamming the flag in the hole but I think he is just too strong for his own good.

This was a qualifying game for the Player of the Year award and at present with 4 games played, Alex McLennan leads with 133 points, closely followed by Captain Roy Herbert and Bob Eaton on 132. So all in all it was a good day for most of us, including our guests and if the course stays like this we will no doubt be back soon.

San Javier’s next game is at Corvera on 21st July and is the Captains Charity Day which will be Help Mar Menor and a donation will be made to this charity from the game. Cost 30€ for members and 35€ for guests. This includes a meal at the El Cojo restaurant in Corvera village after the game. Payday for this game will be Saturday 17th July between 11 and 12 at The Campsite, San Javier.

La Serena 21st April 2010

La Serena 3 Ball Texas Scramble
Wednesday 21st April

An unusual format but it was decided by the number of players after 1 or 2 dropped out. A great day for golf on a well presented course. This course has always been a test
for our players with so much water on it, but today with a Texas Scramble it was going to be beaten. ( Reminder to the committee. Next game I want to play with our President
Barry Butterworth). Barry is on form at the moment, in our last outing at Alicante he romped home well in front and in this game he was at it again. Paired with Alex McLennan,
ex Captain, who was playing well also and Chris Tudor they were first off and managed all 3 balls on the fairway. Chris gave everyone a laugh at the tee with his menagerie of
club head covers so much he is beginning to look like them. Both Barry and Alex are over 70 and use the allowance of playing off the red tees so it did affect their handicap
which was a combined one of 11.5. At the end of the day it was tight but they actually finished well ahead on the gross score with a 67, 5 under par.

Being the first team back and with what they considered to be a very good sore they decided to celebrate with a drink in the clubhouse while they waited for the rest to finish.
Barry opened a pocket on his golf bag to retrieve his money and dropped a 20€ note which blew down the nearest drain, however ever resourceful using two irons he managed
to get the note back to the draincover before dropping it again this time being lost forever. That’s the newest and best way I’ve heard of getting out of buying a round for ages
Barry. Nevertheless they did find the bar and waited for the others to return with only one side getting under par for their round and that was a 71, 1 under.

The results for the Competition were:-

Winners. Barry Butterworth, Alex McLennan and Chris Tudor. Gross 67 H’cap 11.5 Nett 55.5
Runners up. Cpt Roy Herbert, Les Doherty and Ian Smith. Gross 73 H’cap 17.2 Nett 55.8.

It seems the day belonged to the winning 3 ball as the 4 nearest the pin prizes were won by Alex at the 3rd, 9th and 15th whilst Barry won the 17th. The gross 2’s was not won
so will be carried over until the next game.

One more outstanding statistic of the game was the number of balls lost in the waters of La Serena, of the 18 players 54 balls were lost an average of 3 each, but me thinks that
that was not the case. Is this a record I ask?

The next game for the Society will be on May 3rd at Altorreal. Payday is Saturday 1st May at the Campsite San Javier between 11 and 12 noon.

Captains Day at San Juan. Alicante

Captains Day
Alicante Golf Monday 5th April

As is tradition in San Javier we have a retiring Captains Day and this was to be Mick Hardy’s Day.
It turned out though to be more of the Presidents Day as Barry Butterworth had a great day in our medalford competition. This is where we played the front 9 as medal play and the back 9 as a stableford and then took the stableford score from the medal score to leave an overall score.
Anyway after an uneventful journey up to Alicante we arrived in time for breakfast which was included, well tostada and coffee to be precise, good job most of us had breakfast before we left as we would have never survived 18 holes on that. Our first tee time was 11.00 and practice over our first 4 ball set off. We have visited Alicante Golf many times over the years and have always found it to be of a very high standard, but on this particular Monday we were very surprised at the condition of the course. It turned out that the green keepers had been on holiday since the previous Thursday and no maintenance had been done and some 600 people had played the course since then. (Note to bookings Sec, don’t play courses after 4 day break) The greens were in a very poor state with many unrepaired pitch marks and a very uneven surface. This proved to be the downfall of some of our experienced players especially on the front 9 as we were playing medal. Another slightly disappointing addition to the course were the 3 players behind us who after hitting long balls up then appeared at the tee just as we were teeing off and one of whom was wearing jeans and had no idea of golfing etiquette whatsoever. The management of the course have been made aware of the problems encountered and have been very understanding.

That said we were there to enjoy ourselves and we tried our best to ignore the problems. Not only did the greens beat our players but it seems the narrowness of the fairways caught out a few as well, I heard tales of balls disappearing into gardens of surrounding houses and apartments.

The results of the day were as follows:-
Best Front 9 Medal – Ian Smith Nett 35
Best Back 9 Stableford – Barry Butterworth 23 points.
Overall Winner – Barry Butterworth with a score of 17.

There were 4 nearest the Pin prizes and they were won by, Hole 3. Richard Phillips, Hole 8. Roy Herbert, Hole 12. Paul Matthews and Hole 17. Les Doherty. The 2´s pot was split between Rich Phillips, Bob Gallard and Paul Matthews.

The Societies next game is at La Serena on Wednesday 21st April. Payday is at the Campsite San Javier on Saturday 17th April.

Corvera Golf Better Ball competition
Wednesday 24th March 2010

A very poor turnout for the Captains last game in charge but nevertheless a very enjoyable day. The format was changed to a better ball with pairs made up of 1 high and 1 low handicapper together as drawn by the committee, as it turned out the pairings seemed to be just right as the final scores were not very far apart. The weather was unusual, forecasted showers never appeared even though everyone carried waterproofs. Frank Broadhurst called me in the car park and said to forget the sun cream and then halfway through the round the sun came out. It was very difficult to predict what the weather was going to do. The only thing missing was a wind, and most of the round was played in what turned out to be very pleasant conditions. The course is coming on, we played here in December last year and the fairways have improved a bit, the greens were excellent if a little slow and the tee boxes had just been hollow tined but it didn’t create a problem. Overall the course is in good condition if somewhat short but this was an advantage to our higher handicappers who were able to reach the greens in regulation easier.

Well as I said this was Mick’s last game as captain and it seemed he went out with a bang. In the last 4 ball out he finished 45 minutes later than everyone else but when he finally turned up in the bar his card was incredible. Up until this point John Hillier and I were leading in the clubhouse with a score of 44 points, Mick came in with 44 points on his own. His partner Richard Phillips when asked how his partner played said he took credit for coaching and encouraging Mick and was glad he was able to add 2 points to the overall total to give them a win with 46 points. Mick was questioned about his handicap of 19 on the day and he said that he thought he played like a 15 handicapper, well Mick get used to it because that is where you are from now on. Congratulations Mick on an excellent score. This pushed John and myself into 2nd place with 3rd being a tie on 43 points. As usual we had a nearest the pin prize on all the par 3´s and a nearest the pin in 2 on the 18th. The 2´s pot was won by myself on the 2nd hole even though my tee shot was beaten by Frank Broadhurst.
Hole 8 was won by Paul Matthews, hole 15 by Roy Herbert, and no-one finding the green on the 17th. The 18th designated as nearest in two went to Dave Williams with a fantastic shot inside two feet.
The prize giving for this game was at JD´s bar Lo Pagan on Friday evening 26th March.
